A magnitude-3 earthquake hit a town in South Australia on Thursday.
According to Geoscience Australia, the epicenter of the quake was about 385 kilometers northwest of Adelaide.
Many of those who felt it were from the town of Whyalla. Some said they felt it as far away as 30 kilometers.
Phil Cummins, a seismologist for Geoscience Australia, said that although there have been around 40 earthquakes within 50 kilometers of the town of Whyalla since 1974, the area has not seen a lot of activity.
In 1989, a magnitude 3.8 earthquake was felt near the town, while in 1975, a magnitude 2.8 earthquake hit an area 8 kilometers offshore.
According to Cummins, if you go further into the region from Whyalla, you’ll eventually reach areas such as the Flinders Ranges, which have elevated seismicity.
There could also be numerous more quakes that have occurred.
