A family vacationing on Queensland’s K’gari Island narrowly avoided tragedy after the father acted quickly to save his two-year-old child from a dingo attack.
According to the QPWS, the family was in the car park of Lake Mackenzie at K’gari when the father saw a dingoes close to the right side of the vehicle.
He then told his family to get out of the way, but the animal chased them before they could get to their destination.
Despite his efforts to get away from the dingo, the child still suffered two bite wounds on his thigh.
To report the incident, the family drove to Eurong township, which is about 30 minutes away from K’gari.
Linda Behrendorff, a senior ranger, said that the authorities would increase their patrols in the area where the attack happened.
Rangers will also be educating the public about the animal and keeping it away from the area.
To help prevent the animal from attacking again, the authorities are asking the public to tag the animal.
They also urged people to keep their distance from the dingoes and ensure that they are following proper safety procedures.
Dr. Behrendorff said that the animals were denning at the moment and were most likely juveniles and sub-adults.
In addition to discouraging people from feeding or encouraging the dingoes, the authorities also urged the public to avoid getting too close to the animals.
They said it was very important that people report any negative interactions with the animals to the QPWS.
