In South Australia, new drivers will have to complete an online training course in order to get a license to operate ultra-high-powered cars. This is the first time that such drivers will have to pass through this type of course in the country.
It aims to educate them about the risks associated with driving such cars, such as the specific laws that apply to them.
The new U-class license will be issued to all South Australian drivers who will be driving ultra-high-powered vehicles from December 1.
It follows the death of a teenager named Sophia Naismith, who was walking on a footpath in 2019. She was hit by a Lamborghini in Glengowrie.
Following the tragic incident, the South Australian government committed to implementing various reforms to improve the safety of the state’s roads.
One of these involves giving the police more power to suspend the licenses of drivers involved in serious accidents.
Tom Koutsantonis, the state’s transport minister, said the training course will teach new drivers about the risks they can face while operating ultra-high-powered automobiles.
He noted that it’s important to influence the behavior of drivers but also to ensure that the law enforcers have the necessary resources to punish those who put others at risk.
Through the support of the Naismith family and the government, the reforms were able to be implemented.
