A young surfer was attacked by a shark while he was at a beach in NSW, Australia. He was taken to a hospital after emergency services were called at around 11 am on Tuesday.

The man was reportedly attacked while he was surfing at the North Shore beach in Port Macquarie.

He was then treated at the beach before he was taken to the hospital.

In a statement, the lifeguards of Port Macquarie said that the victim was attacked by a shark and that members of the public helped him by using tourniquets.

The beaches between Lighthouse Beach and North Shore were also closed.

A rescue helicopter and crews were then sent to the area.

The lifeguards noted that the beaches would remain closed for at least another 24 hours.
