The monorail at Australia’s first theme park, SeaWorld on the Gold Coast, is set to close after almost four decades.
The attraction, which was the country’s first, was opened in 1986 but has since been dormant.
Bikash Randhawa, the chief operating officer of Village Roadshow Theme Parks, said that the park would close after around 330,000 rides.
The monorail was first introduced at Sea World in 1986 as the country’s first system of its kind.
Over the course of its 38-year history, it transported over 300,000 people around the theme park.
Unfortunately, it was eventually shut down in 2019 as part of the park’s new $50 million attraction called The New Atlantis.
Speculation about the monorail’s future had been raised due to reports about its deteriorating condition and the issues with its supply of required parts.
Bikash Randhawa said that the park’s infrastructure could no longer support the attraction.
Like many families, he had fond memories of the rail. Mr Randhawa noted that the park’s officials had tried their best to keep it going.
He said that the demolition of the rail would begin in the park by the end of the year.
According to Dale Beer, the monorail driver for eight years, the rail was an “awesome” feature.
Although he was sad to see the monorail go, he noted that he was excited about the park’s future attractions.
Users on the Internet expressed their sadness at the closure. One user called it the end of an era.
