Sam Landsberger, a sports journalist from Melbourne, died after he was hit by a truck while he was reporting on an incident in Richmond.

The 35-year-old died in hospital after the accident happened at around 10.20 am on Tuesday.

He had worked for the Herald Sun for 14 years and was a contributor to Fox Footy.

He was reportedly an energetic and popular individual in the newsroom. Sam was also known for his ability to break big stories and provide expert analysis on Fox Footy.

His death is a devastating loss to his family, friends, and colleagues, according to Sam Weir, the editor of the Herald Sun.

Sam was well-respected and had a promising career ahead of him.

In 2023, he won a Quill award for revealing Essendon’s CEO Andrew Thorburn’s connection to a controversial church. Thorburn stepped down the following day.

He was previously named as the Rising Star of the Media by the Australian Football League.

Before he became a contributor for the Herald Sun, Landsberger worked for Leader Community Newspapers.

On Tuesday, the Fox Footy network paid tribute to Sam, with Gerard Whateley, the host of AFL 360, describing him as a highly-respected member of the local sports journalism community.

According to Whateley, Landsberger had only been covering the Olympic Games in France for a couple of days.

He graduated from a local high school in 2006, and he also studied journalism at Monash University.

The incident is being investigated by the police. The truck driver who was not injured stopped to help the officers at the scene.
