A police officer was among six individuals injured in a stabbing and car crash in Sydney’s southern region.

Emergency services were called to the scene of a two-car collision on the Princes Highway at Engadine at around 9 am.

It’s believed that the incident started after a man and woman got into an argument.

According to police, the woman was assaulted inside the vehicle by a man.

Superintendent Don Fauldings stated that the suspect, who was reportedly armed with a box cutter, ran away after emerging from the car.

A passenger in the vehicle suffered multiple stab wounds. A police officer was also injured during the incident.

The officer was taken to St. George Hospital in a serious condition. A woman in the car was also taken to the same facility in a serious condition.

According to Faulds, six patients were assessed by NSW Ambulance paramedics. Two of them were injured during the crash.

He noted that the two people in the car were in an ongoing domestic relationship.

The man is known to law enforcers. Faulds commended the members of the public who came to help the victims of the accident.

He also praised the individuals who thought they were responding to a car crash.

However, they were confronted by a man armed with a box cutter. NSW Police Minister Yasmin Catley stated that there was no ongoing danger to the public.

Following the incident, Catley stated that the person of concern had been apprehended.

The highway was closed in both directions near Heathcote Road and Farnell Avenue.

She assured the public that there was no danger to the community.
