According to the New South Wales Police, a car was most likely driving into oncoming traffic when it caused a fatal crash on Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Two individuals died in the incident, which involved four cars and a bus. At around 1:40 pm on Thursday, emergency officials were called to the scene.

Paramedics from NSW Ambulance attended to two individuals at the scene. They were later transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.

Unfortunately, despite the efforts of paramedics, a man who was also at the scene eventually died.

The police noted that a report regarding the incident will be prepared for the coroner. The bus driver was not injured during the incident. Motorists were asked to avoid the area due to the accident.

Clayton McDonald, an acting superintendent, told reporters that emergency services were dispatched to the scene after receiving multiple calls about the accident.

He said that, on arrival, they saw a male individual who had died in one of the cars. A short time later, another person died.

The identities of the two individuals who died have not been established. McDonald said that the police did not have a clear explanation as to how the accident occurred.

He noted that a vehicle traveling northbound suddenly veered into the southbound lanes.

It was not clear why the car drove into the oncoming traffic, McDonald noted. The police also planned to examine footage from traffic cameras in order to establish the cause of the accident.

Adam Dewberry, a superintendent of the Fire and Rescue NSW, said that crews had to use hydraulic tools to cut and pull apart the damaged vehicles in order to free two people who were trapped inside.

To minimize the risk of a fire, the firefighters responded to the scene by taking preventative measures. They also started to clean up the spilled hazardous materials.
