Riding High, Taken Too Soon
Khye Brickell, a 12-year-old boy from Mill Park, will be remembered for his bright spirit and infectious enthusiasm.
Tragically, Khye’s life was cut short when he collided with a car while riding an e-scooter on Wednesday evening.
The incident occurred at the intersection of Betula Ave and Childs Rd, and despite the best efforts of medical professionals, Khye succumbed to his injuries.
A Kind and Caring Soul
Khye was a beloved student at Mill Park Primary School, where he was known for his kindness, bright smile, and caring nature. His school described him as a “bright spirit who touched so many lives” and said he will be “deeply missed by his classmates, teachers, and all who knew him.” His teachers and classmates will remember him for bringing joy to everyone around him, and his family will always be in their hearts.
A Passion for BMX
Outside of school, Khye loved to ride BMX, and his club, Northern BMX Club, paid tribute to his memory. The club praised the Brickell family’s dedication and passion for BMX, saying their commitment was “instrumental in re-establishing BMX in the north.” Khye’s love for the sport will be remembered by those who rode beside him, and his spirit will live on.
A Selfless Act
In the midst of tragedy, Khye’s selfless decision to be an organ donor has already saved the lives of other children. This incredible act of generosity is a testament to his character and will be remembered forever. As the Northern BMX Club said, “Even in this tragedy, Khye’s spirit of generosity shines through.”
Support for the Family
A GoFundMe page has been set up by Rail Safeworking Solutions, where Khye’s father, Lee, works, to support the family during this difficult time. The fundraiser aims to help ease the financial burden of funeral expenses and daily costs, allowing Lee and Kim to focus on what matters most: each other. The page has already raised over $48,000 of its $10,000 goal, a testament to the outpouring of support for the family.
A Warning and a Reality Check
Khye’s death marks the 258th death on Victorian roads this year. His tragic accident serves as a warning to all road users to be vigilant and cautious. It’s a harsh reminder of the importance of road safety, especially for young people who are often more vulnerable on our roads.
