What’s behind the surprise move?
Just hours after the school year ended, parents at St Helena Preschool in Eltham North received an unexpected letter from management at ECMS.
The bombshell? Mother’s and Father’s Days were being axed in favor of a more “inclusive” celebration.
Meet the new “Family Day”
According to the letter, next year’s celebrations will focus on honoring all caregivers or significant figures in children’s lives. Kids will be encouraged to express gratitude and recognize those who play a supportive role in their lives. While the intention may be good, not everyone is on board with the change.
Why the backlash?
ECMS chief executive Kieran Kearney explained that the move is about recognizing that family means different things to different people and communities. However, many parents are upset, feeling that the change is an attempt to be overly politically correct. Dr. Bella d’Abrera from the Institute of Public Affairs went so far as to call it “woke activism.”
The majority of parents don’t support the change
While the goal is to be more inclusive, many argue that the change ends up excluding the majority population. Parents are upset, and some are even calling the move a form of “politicization of toddlers and infants.” The lack of consultation with parents has only added to the frustration.
ECMS runs 69 private centers across Melbourne
The change affects more than half of these centers, leaving many parents feeling blindsided. When asked about the backlash, Kearney acknowledged that change can be difficult, but emphasized that it’s necessary for growth.
Is this the end of traditional celebrations?
While some may see this as a step towards a more inclusive and accepting society, others believe it’s a step too far. As the debate rages on, one thing is clear: the way we celebrate special days in kindergartens may never be the same again.
What do you think? Should kindergartens continue to celebrate traditional Mother’s and Father’s Days, or is it time for a change? Share your thoughts in the comments!
