In a surprise move, Donald Trump has appointed Mark Burnett, the 64-year-old producer of The Apprentice, as his Special Envoy to the United Kingdom.
Burnett is set to take up the role after the hit show catapulted Trump’s profile to stardom in the 2000s and 2010s.
A Familiar Face in TV Production
Burnett is a well-known television producer, having created and produced some of the biggest shows in TV history, including Survivor, Shark Tank, Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader, and The Voice. Trump praised Burnett’s “unique blend of diplomatic acumen and international recognition” in a statement on Truth Social.
What Does the New Role Entail?
The President-elect shed some light on the new position, saying that Burnett will focus on enhancing diplomatic relations between the US and the UK, with a particular emphasis on trade, investment opportunities, and cultural exchanges. However, it remains unclear what specific responsibilities Burnett will have as the first Special Envoy to Britain.
A Change of Heart?
Interestingly, Burnett and his wife, actress Roma Downey, distanced themselves from Trump in 2016, criticizing the “hatred, division, and misogyny” that characterized his campaign. It’s unclear whether their views have changed or what led to Burnett’s appointment to this new role.
Other Ambassadorial Appointments
Trump has also nominated Warren Stephens to serve as the US ambassador to the UK, while Sir Keir Starmer has appointed Lord Peter Mandelson as the UK’s ambassador in Washington. However, Mandelson’s past remarks about Trump may create tension in their working relationship. Trump has also tapped Tilman Fertitta, a billionaire reality TV star, to be his ambassador to Italy.
A Look Back at Trump’s Rise to Fame
Trump hosted The Apprentice for 14 seasons between 2004 and 2017, a show that made him a household name. Burnett’s appointment is seen as a nod to the show’s success and Trump’s gratitude towards the producer.
