A desperate search is underway for a 15-year-old boy who was swept away by a wave at a popular beach on the NSW Central Coast.
Luca Bennett, a young basketballer from The Scots College, was with two friends on the rocks at North Avoca Beach when the tragedy occurred.
The Fateful Moment
At around 3 pm on Tuesday, the three friends were hit by a wave, and while two of them managed to get out of the water, Luca was not so lucky. His friends quickly raised the alarm with nearby lifeguards, but despite their best efforts, they were unable to rescue him.
Inspector Ben Campbell of the Brisbane Water Police District described the situation as “tragic” and said the boy’s family were “very upset.” A massive search operation was launched, involving multiple emergency services, including Brisbane Water Police District officers, Marine Area Command, NSW Ambulance, Surf Life Saving NSW, and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.
The Search Continues
The search effort continued into Wednesday, with marine rescue crews battling choppy conditions and 2.5-3m swells. Despite their best efforts, Luca had not been found by early Wednesday afternoon. Marine Rescue Terrigal assisted NSW Police with the search, deploying a volunteer crew and rescue vessel to search the area.
Central Coast Council councillor Jared Wright praised the emergency responders for their efforts, saying, “The thoughts of our community are with the young man and his family during this difficult time.” He also urged people to stay safe in and around water this summer, emphasizing the importance of swimming between the flags, swimming with a friend, and letting someone know where you’re going.
Hazardous Surf Warning Issued
As the search for Luca continues, a hazardous surf warning has been issued by the Bureau of Meteorology for the Byron Coast, Coffs Coast, Macquarie Coast, Hunter Coast, and Sydney Coast. The warning advises people to avoid coastal activities such as rock fishing, boating, and swimming due to hazardous surf and swell conditions.
The Community Comes Together
The Central Coast community has rallied around Luca’s family, offering support and prayers during this difficult time. As the search for Luca continues, our thoughts are with his family and friends, hoping for a miraculous outcome.
If you have any information about Luca’s whereabouts, please come forward and help bring this young man home to his loved ones.
