Imagine waking up on a lazy Sunday afternoon to the sound of your smoke alarm blaring and your Christmas tree engulfed in flames. This was the terrifying reality for a family of four in Melbourne’s eastern suburb of Glen Waverley.
A Desperate Escape
George, the father, was home with his two daughters when the blaze broke out around 12:40 pm. He tried to act fast, grabbing a hose to douse the flames, but it was too late. The fire spread quickly, forcing him to flee the house with his daughters in tow. They barely made it out alive.
“It all happened so quickly,” said Roula, the mother, who was at work when the tragedy unfolded. “Christmas is ruined, literally.”
A Heroic Effort
The bravery of the firefighters who responded to the emergency call cannot be overstated. It took 38 firefighters and 12 trucks to bring the blaze under control by 2:05 pm. The inferno had already spread to neighboring properties and the freeway embankment behind the house.
A Family Left with Nothing
The townhouse, which had been the family’s home for 24 years, was gutted by the fire. The family of four was left with almost nothing, except the clothes on their backs. A GoFundMe page was set up by a family friend, Maria Bulovic, to help them rebuild their shattered lives.
“They had lost everything and were left with only the clothes they were wearing,” Maria wrote on the page. “This is devastating, not only so close to Christmas, but now they’re trying to get their lives back to some sort of normality.”
A Community Rallies Around
By Wednesday afternoon, the GoFundMe page had raised over $20,000 of its $50,000 goal. The donations will go towards helping the family cover the basic necessities, clothing, Christmas gifts, and food.
The family’s ordeal is a harsh reminder of the importance of fire safety, especially during the holiday season. As they struggle to come to terms with their loss, the community’s support is a beacon of hope in their darkest hour.
The Road to Recovery
The road ahead will be long and arduous, but with the help of their community, the family can start to rebuild their lives. The townhouse, sadly, will have to be demolished, but with time, love, and support, the family can create new memories and start anew.
