Queensland is in the grip of a COVID outbreak, with hospitalisations skyrocketing and a new mutant strain spreading like wildfire.
The state’s Chief Health Officer, Dr. Heidi Carroll, has sounded the alarm, warning that the virus “is not going away” and that it’s crucial for residents to take immediate action to stop the spread.
The Alarming Numbers
In the past fortnight, a staggering 44% of detected cases in Queensland have been identified as the XEC variant, the newest and most contagious strain of COVID to hit Australia. The daily average number of hospitalisations has more than doubled, from 113 to 258, with most cases affecting older Australians and those who haven’t kept up with their booster shots.
Who’s at Risk?
Dr. Carroll warned that those aged 65 and older are at the greatest risk from COVID-19, with 77% of hospitalised patients falling into this age group. She stressed that it’s essential for this demographic to get vaccinated and take precautions to avoid contracting the virus.
How to Stop the Spread
To halt the momentum of this COVID wave, Dr. Carroll urged Queenslanders to:
- Ensure their vaccinations are up to date
- Stay home if they’re unwell
- Practise good hygiene
The XEC Variant: What We Know So Far
Associate Professor Dr. Lara Herrero from Griffith University revealed that the XEC variant is on the verge of becoming the dominant strain globally, with reports suggesting it may be able to spread more easily than other variants. While it’s unclear why XEC is more contagious, research suggests it may thrive in warmer weather, making the upcoming summer months a critical period.
Take Action This Holiday Season
As we head into peak festive gathering season, Dr. Carroll warned that Queenslanders are at greater risk of catching and spreading the virus. She urged residents not to be the person who gives the unwelcome gift of COVID-19 over Christmas and New Year. By taking the necessary precautions, we can halt the spread of COVID and enjoy a safer holiday season.
