A shocking revelation has come to light in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court, where it was revealed that the accused killer driver, Steven Wilson, was on six counts of bail when he allegedly ploughed into an innocent motorist in Footscray, resulting in a fatal crash.
The Fatal Crash
The incident occurred on Monday at approximately 4:30 am, when a stolen truck collided with a 2011 Toyota Corolla at the intersection of Ballarat Rd and Moore St.
The driver of the Corolla, a 67-year-old man from Taylors Hill, died instantly at the scene.
The Alleged Driver’s History
Wilson, a 40-year-old man from Deer Park, faced court on Friday, charged with manslaughter, culpable driving, and conduct endangering life.
What’s more shocking is that this was his first time in custody, despite being on six counts of bail at the time of the crash.
The Investigation
The court heard that an extensive volume of crime scene material would need to be analyzed, including CCTV footage, police airwing footage, and a crash reconstruction report.
The prosecutor also mentioned that experts in Germany would be involved in the analysis. The brief of evidence is expected to take 20 weeks to compile.
The Pursuit
Police had been chasing the allegedly stolen truck for over half an hour before the fatal crash.
The truck was seen driving erratically in Beveridge at around 2:30 am and was involved in another collision on Hopkins Rd in Truganina at approximately 3:15 am.
The Aftermath
The accused killer driver, Steven Wilson, appeared in court, aided by crutches, and requested medical attention, stating that he had not received any medication.
He has been remanded to reappear in court on July 10.
A Tragic Incident
Victoria Police’s Professional Standards Command will oversee the investigation, as the man died while police were following the truck at the time of the crash.
Assistant Commissioner Glenn Weir described the incident as an “absolute tragedy,” saying it’s one of the things that keeps him awake at night.
