Novak Djokovic, the Serbian tennis ace, has made a stunning revelation that has sparked a new debate about his deportation from the 2022 Australian Open.
In a recent interview with GQ, Djokovic claimed that he was “poisoned” during his detention in an Australian immigration facility.
He alleged that the food he was served contained alarmingly high levels of lead and mercury, which he discovered after conducting tests when he returned to Serbia.
What Happened to Djokovic in Australia?
Djokovic was detained in Melbourne for five days after his visa was cancelled due to his unvaccinated status against Covid-19.
He has now spoken out about the health issues he faced during that time, saying, “I had some health issues. And I realized that in that hotel in Melbourne, I was fed with some food that poisoned me.”
The former World No. 1 added that he had “a really high level of heavy metal” in his body, including lead and mercury.
Nick Kyrgios Supports Djokovic’s Allegations
Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios, a friend of Djokovic, has supported his allegations.
During a press conference ahead of the 2025 Australian Open, Kyrgios expressed his disappointment with how his country treated Djokovic.
“We treated him like s**t, that’s for sure. We wouldn’t have done that,” Kyrgios said. This public backing from Kyrgios has added fuel to the debate about Djokovic’s deportation.
Djokovic’s Upcoming Australian Open Campaign
Despite the controversy, Djokovic is set to chase a record-extending 11th Australian Open title.
He will begin his campaign against Indian-origin American tennis player Nishesh Basavareddy in the opening round.
Currently ranked World No. 7, Djokovic is also hoping to win a record-extending 25th Grand Slam title. With the addition of Andy Murray to his coaching staff, Djokovic is looking to bounce back from a disappointing 2024 season.
Will Djokovic be able to put the controversy behind him and focus on his game? Can he overcome the challenges and win another Australian Open title? Only time will tell. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
