A devastating wildfire has torn through Malibu, California, claiming the life of 32-year-old Australian man, Rory Callum Sykes.
The news was confirmed by Rory’s mother, Shelly Sykes, in a heartfelt statement on social media.
A Life of Defiance and Achievement
Born blind and with cerebral palsy, Rory had already overcome numerous challenges in his life. With the help of surgeries and therapies, he regained his sight and learned to walk.
His determination and spirit inspired many, including his mother, who said he had “overcome so much” before his life was tragically cut short on January 8.
It is with great sadness that I have to announce the death of my beautiful son @Rorysykes to the Malibu fires yesterday. I’m totally heart broken. A Bright Career and Passion for Giving
Rory’s early life was marked by a career as a child actor and model. He hosted the British RTV Show Kiddy Kapers and even performed at the Sydney Opera House.
Later, he became an online gamer, philanthropist, and public speaker. In 2005, he co-founded the Happy Charity alongside his mother, dedicated to fundraising for sick children globally.
A Preventable Tragedy?
Rory’s mother, Dr. Sykes, has raised questions about the circumstances surrounding her son’s death. She claims that the local water company, Las Virgenes Municipal Water, had switched off the water supply, making it impossible for her to put out the cinders on Rory’s roof with a hose.
Even the brave firefighters who responded to the emergency had no access to water.
Dr. Sykes was forced to leave Rory alone and drive to the nearest fire station to raise the alarm, only to return to find his cottage burnt to the ground.
A Community in Mourning
The Malibu wildfire has claimed at least 11 lives and destroyed over 10,000 structures since it began on Thursday.
Rory’s death has sent shockwaves through the community, with many taking to social media to pay tribute to his remarkable life and achievements. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
