A devastating plane crash in the Northern Territory has claimed the life of a 63-year-old man. The incident occurred on Sunday at around 10:20 am in Middle Point, near the notorious Fogg Dam.
What Happened?
The light plane, carrying two occupants, crashed into the dam, resulting in the death of the pilot. A 29-year-old female passenger was luckily uninjured and was winched to safety by a helicopter.
The woman was then transported to Royal Darwin Hospital for a thorough assessment.
Eyewitness Account
A witness reported seeing the plane flying low over the area around 9:00 am, just hours before the crash. “They didn’t seem to be having any trouble,” she said.
However, about two hours later, the witness noticed a police vehicle with flashing lights and soon spotted the plane about 50 to 75 meters from the dam wall.
The scene was quickly filled with emergency services, including police cars, ambulances, and a CareFlight team.
Investigation Underway
The Northern Territory Police have declared the scene a crime scene and are currently investigating the cause of the crash. The incident is a grim reminder of the risks associated with flying, especially in remote areas like the Northern Territory.
