A mother’s shocking discovery at a Woolworths self-serve checkout has sparked a warning to fellow shoppers.
She noticed a glitch that caused a $6 Gabby’s Dollhouse colouring book to scan as eight books, resulting in a total of $48.
The Glitch That’s Leaving Shoppers Out of Pocket
The woman took to social media to share her experience, saying, “We scanned one, and it scans up as eight.”
She was relieved to have checked her receipt before leaving the store. However, when staff tried to help her, the issue persisted, with the shop assistant admitting it “wasn’t the first time” it had happened.
Dozens of Shoppers Report Similar Experiences
Several social media users have come forward, sharing their own experiences with similar glitches.
One user, who works at Woolworths, said, “I had the exact same thing happen to me on a big register with that exact item, and it came up with eight.”

Another user reported a similar issue at Coles, where a can of Monster energy drink scanned as a pack of four, resulting in an incorrect total.
Other Stores Affected Too?
The issue doesn’t seem to be limited to Woolworths, with users reporting similar experiences at other stores, including Aldi and Big W.
One user said, “I scanned the barcode on my pack of eggs, and it scanned on the Woolies system as 15 packs of eggs! Instead of almost $6, it was nearly $90.”
What’s the Solution?
So, what can you do to avoid falling victim to these glitches? The answer is simple: always check your receipt before leaving the store.
One user said, “I check as I am scanning most times, but I always scan the receipt fully before leaving. Because if I’ve already paid and there’s an issue, usually get it for free.”
Woolworths Responds
A Woolworths spokesperson has responded to the complaint, saying it was an “isolated incident” related to the barcode on the item.
The scanning error has since been corrected to ensure it doesn’t happen again.
The spokesperson added, “We’re glad to see that our team was able to quickly rectify this issue in-store, and the customer was only charged for the correct quantity.”
What to Do If You Encounter an Issue
If you experience a similar issue, don’t hesitate to speak to the store team. They will work with you to resolve the problem.
Remember, it’s always better to be safe than sorry, and checking your receipt can save you from unnecessary hassle and expense.
