If you’re an Aussie selling stuff on Facebook Marketplace, beware! Scammers are posing as interested buyers, claiming to be using Australia Post to make payments.
But it’s all a ruse to steal your sensitive info and money.
How the Scam Works
Here’s what the scammers do:
- They contact you about a product you’re selling on Facebook Marketplace, pretending to be a genuine buyer.
- They send you a fake link with a QR code, saying they’ve paid for the item and its shipment via Australia Post.
- If you click on the link, you’ll be taken to a fake Australia Post site where you’ll be asked to “receive” the payment.
-
The Catch
But here’s the thing: Australia Post doesn’t provide prepayment services for online marketplace listings. So, if someone sends you a link to pay for an item, it’s likely a scam.
What to Do
To avoid falling victim to this scam, remember:
- Never click on any Australia Post links during a sale on Facebook Marketplace.
- Don’t provide any sensitive info, like payment card details, to anyone claiming to be from Australia Post.
- Be cautious when dealing with buyers on Facebook Marketplace, and always verify their identities before making a sale.
The Stats Are Alarming
According to Scamwatch, over 6,000 Aussies lost a whopping $58.3 million to social media scams in the first 10 months of 2024. That’s more than any other contact method!
Scammers are using fake profiles, messaging platforms, and apps to steal money and personal info.
Australia Post’s Warning
“Australia Post encourages customers to exercise caution and stay vigilant against scams of all types,” says an Australia Post spokeswoman.
“We will never call or message customers to request payment, or provide links or QR codes relating to online marketplace listings.”
