If you’re living in Queensland, get ready for a scorching week ahead! Temperatures are set to soar from today, following a night of storms in the northern parts of the state.
Storms Bring Relief, But Heat is Coming
Parts of the Gulf Country, North West, Northern Flinders, and Upper Goldfields received some much-needed rainfall overnight, with Kowanyama seeing 51mm, Palmerville getting 66mm, and areas inland from Mackay receiving a whopping 95mm.
However, the relief is short-lived, as the state is bracing for a prolonged run of warm weather.
Brisbane, Get Ready for the Heat
Brisbane, it’s not just the north that’s going to feel the heat – you can expect temperatures to rise later this week too.
According to Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Angus Hines, many spots will see temperatures 5 to 7 degrees warmer than their typical January maximum temps.
Heatwave Warning Issued
A heatwave warning is in place across most of the state, affecting locations including Brisbane, Biloela, Barcaldine, Dalby, Goondiwindi, Ipswich, Isisford, Roma, Stanthorpe, and St George.
If you’re living in these areas, make sure to take precautions to stay safe.
What to Expect
The next few days will be “relatively settled, dry, sunny and, of course, warm,” according to Mr. Hines.
Western parts of the state can expect temperatures above 40 degrees, with Birdsville set to reach 44 today and 46 tomorrow.
Staying Safe in the Heat
Environment Australia’s Beau Frigault warns that heat is “one of the biggest silent killers” in Australia.
To stay safe, find a place with air conditioning, exercise indoors or in the cooler parts of the day, stay hydrated, and check in on vulnerable people, such as pregnant women, children, and those with cardiovascular or kidney disease.
Bushfire Risks in Western Queensland
In western Queensland, an outback council is working closely with property owners to mitigate bushfire risks. With hot weather and high winds, the region is “suffering badly at the moment” due to a lack of rain.
An active avoid smoke warning is in place in Jericho, and there are several contained fires in the central west region.
Take Action
Stay safe, Queensland! With the heatwave warning in place, make sure to take precautions to protect yourself and your loved ones.
Stay tuned for further updates, and don’t forget to check in on those who may be vulnerable to the extreme heat.
