A devastating incident occurred at Pambula Beach in the Bega Valley over the Australia Day long weekend, resulting in the drowning of a 65-year-old man.
The tragedy took place around 5:20pm on Monday when emergency services were called to the popular South Coast beach after reports of a swimmer in trouble.
What Happened?
According to Director of Far South Coast Surf Life Saving, Emma O’Neill, the man was swimming close to the area where the flags had been set up, about half an hour after the lifeguards had finished their patrol.
A brave civilian conducted a rescue from the water and notified off-duty lifeguards, who commenced CPR. Unfortunately, the man was pronounced deceased at the scene.
A Sobering Reminder of Beach Safety
This incident brings the summer drowning toll to 13, highlighting the importance of swimming between the red and yellow flags while patrols are on duty.
Ms O’Neill emphasized the need for beachgoers to be aware of the patrol hours, which have been reduced to four hours after the school holidays.
She encouraged everyone to download the BeachSafe App, which provides information on patrol times and flag locations for beaches along the Far South Coast.
Staying Safe at the Beach
The water may look calm, but Ms O’Neill warned that there have been some nasty currents lately. She advised beachgoers to be extra vigilant before entering the water and to remember that sometimes the risks are not visible from the land.
With the summer season in full swing, it’s essential to prioritize beach safety to avoid such tragedies.
Investigation Underway
Police from the South Coast District are investigating the incident, and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.
Pambula Beach is a patrolled location, and authorities are reminding everyone of the risks associated with swimming and the importance of beach safety.
Tathra Beach is the only beach along the Far South Coast with weekday patrols continuing throughout February, while other main beaches will revert to weekend volunteer patrols until ANZAC Day.
Stay Safe, Stay Informed
As we enjoy the beautiful beaches along the South Coast, let’s remember to prioritize our safety and the safety of those around us.
By being aware of the patrol hours, swimming between the flags, and staying informed through the BeachSafe App, we can minimize the risks and have a fun and safe summer.
