Elizabeth “Liz” Keys, a 33-year-old Washington-based attorney, was on her way to celebrate her birthday with her boyfriend, David Seidman, when tragedy struck.
She was aboard American Eagle Flight 5342, which collided with a US Army Black Hawk helicopter in midair on Wednesday night.
A Life Cut Short: Who Was Elizabeth Keys?
Liz was a vibrant and ambitious young woman who had made a name for herself as a talented attorney.
She was a valedictorian of her high school class in Cincinnati and went on to graduate from Tufts University, where she was a member of the varsity sailing team.
After completing her law degree at Georgetown University Law Center, she began working as an attorney for Wilkinson Stekloff in DC.
A Birthday Celebration Turned Tragic
Liz had made a last-minute decision to fly back early from a business trip to celebrate her birthday with David.
The couple had plans to dine at Maydan, a popular restaurant in Northwest DC, before hosting friends at a joint birthday party on Saturday.
David, who had been waiting for Liz to arrive, never got to see her land for their celebratory date.
Remembering Liz: A Sharp Wit and a Bright Light
Those who knew Liz describe her as a sharp-witted and fearless individual who lit up the room with her presence.
Her boyfriend, David, remembered her as “the best partner” who always pushed those around her to be their best selves. Her family, including her parents, Mary and Martin Keys, are experiencing “unbearable sorrow” following her loss.
Mary Keys said, “Liz had a sharp wit and appreciated it in others. Gatherings were always better when Liz was there; she was filled with light and joy.”
A Community in Mourning
The DC community is in shock following the deadly plane crash, which is the deadliest airline crash in the US in over two decades.
At least 40 bodies have been pulled from the Potomac River, and the search for survivors continues. Liz’s family and friends are still trying to come to terms with the loss of this bright and ambitious young woman.
A Life of Service and Passion
Liz was not only a talented attorney but also a dedicated individual who gave back to her community. She had a pro bono practice and was committed to making a difference in the lives of those around her.
Her former high school principal, Ray Spicher, described her as a “natural leader” and a “model student.”
As the investigation into the cause of the crash continues, Liz’s family and friends are left to mourn the loss of a young woman who had so much to offer.
Her legacy will live on through the countless lives she touched and the memories she created with those who loved her.
