If you thought it was hot already, think again! This week is going to be a scorcher in remote parts of Australia, with temperatures potentially soaring to a blistering 50 degrees in some areas.
What’s Causing the Extreme Heat?
According to Weatherzone, a combination of stagnant and slow-moving weather systems is to blame for the heatwave.
A strong high-pressure system southwest of Western Australia is directing furnace-like air from the interior towards the coast, and Tropical Cyclone Taliah is warming up the atmosphere as it releases latent heat energy.
This perfect storm of heat is expected to affect the Pilbara and Kimberley districts in WA, with possible readings of 50C on Friday.
A Mixed Bag of Severe Weather
But it’s not just the heat that’s making headlines – Australia is experiencing a wild mix of severe weather this week.
From flooding rain in northern Australia to bushfires in southern Australia, heatwaves, severe thunderstorms, and two severe tropical cyclones, it’s a dynamic and volatile time for the country.
Weatherzone says an intense heat build-up over the past two months has created an ideal environment for this wild weather.
Heatwave Warnings Issued
A heatwave warning has been issued for South Australia, with severe heatwave conditions expected over western and southern parts of the state.
Overnight minimum temperatures are expected to be in the high teens to low twenties in southern parts, increasing to mid to high twenties in the north.
Areas likely to be impacted include Bordertown, Clare, Jamestown, Narracoorte, Renmark, and the Barossa Valley.
Thunderstorms on the Way
The hot air over southern Australia is also producing thunderstorms, with severe storms likely on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Areas affected will include parts of Victoria, Tasmania, and southern New South Wales.
