Queensland’s flood crisis has taken a devastating turn, with a second death confirmed in the state’s far north.
The body of an 82-year-old woman was found in a cane paddock on Fulton Dr in Bermiside, near Ingham, on Tuesday morning.
What Happened
The woman was last seen inside her two-storey home by a neighbour around 6pm on Monday.
When the neighbour couldn’t find her the next day, they raised concerns with the authorities.
After the floodwaters receded, the woman’s body was discovered in the paddock.
This tragic incident comes after a 63-year-old woman lost her life on Sunday when an SES boat helping people through floodwaters struck a tree and flipped.
The Ingham community is still reeling from the shock, and now they’re facing another heartbreaking loss.
Floods Continue to Batter North Queensland
Other flood-hit communities in the state’s far north are starting to return to their homes, but they’re being warned to prepare for more heavy downpours.
The region has been lashed by record-breaking rain over the past week, causing floods that have cut power, damaged roads, and forced hundreds of people to flee.
A Glimmer of Hope
Although the heavy rainfall has eased, providing some relief, the Bureau of Meteorology has warned that major flooding is still ongoing in multiple catchments.
Major flood warnings are still in place for the Herbert and Haughton River catchments, and some areas are still experiencing heavy falls.
The Numbers Are Staggering
The seven-day rainfall totals have surpassed 1m in some areas, with 1697mm recorded at Cardwell Range, 1693mm at Rollingstone, and 1662mm at Macknade Sugar Mill.
The cumulative rainfall totals from the past week are driving the ongoing flood risk for the region.
As the people of Queensland struggle to come to terms with the devastation, they’re bracing themselves for more challenges ahead. Stay safe, and stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
