A Perth father, Dean Healy, is on a mission to join the Churchlands Senior High School board and keep what he calls the “woke mind virus” out of the school.
He’s one of eight nominees vying for three positions on the board, and he’s not holding back on his views.
With over 2,300 students enrolled, Churchlands is one of the largest public schools in Western Australia, and Healy is determined to make his voice heard.
What Drives Dean Healy’s Campaign?
Healy, a business professional and father of two, is driven by a desire to protect traditional values and prioritize academic excellence.
He believes that schools should focus on teaching critical thinking skills, rather than pushing “government-driven agendas” or “divisive ideologies.”
He’s concerned that the “woke mind virus” – which he defines as radical ideologies that promote conformity over independent thought – is infiltrating schools and undermining the education system.
A Focus on Transparency and Accountability
Healy’s pitch to fellow parents is clear: he wants to ensure that schools are transparent and accountable to the community.
He believes that schools should prioritize “real and practical education” over ideologies that promote conformity. “Our children deserve an education that fosters critical thinking, not conformity,” he says.
“I will fight for transparency, accountability, and an unwavering focus on equipping students with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in life.”
How School Boards Work
So, what do school boards actually do? According to the WA Education Department, public school boards are designed to work with the school community to achieve the best outcomes for students.
They play a role in governance, resource management, and ensuring that the school’s priorities align with community expectations.
The boards consist of the principal, staff, parents, and community members with relevant skills and expertise.
Diversity in Board Membership Matters
The department emphasizes the importance of diversity in board membership, saying that it contributes to effective school governance and leads to better-informed decision-making.
“Council and board members are encouraged to reflect on the diversity of their school community and the council or board,” the department’s website reads.
With Healy’s campaign focus on traditional values and academic excellence, it will be interesting to see how his nomination plays out in the context of the school’s diverse community.
