A daring incident involving a stolen police vehicle has left authorities shaken in Murgon, Queensland.
On Saturday, June 21, two teenagers were taken into custody after a series of events that would put even the most experienced action movie heroes to shame.
The Chaos Begins
It all started around 11:30 am when police received reports of a break-in at a Meddletons Road property in Lake Barambah.
The thieves made off with several watercraft, and police were hot on their heels.
With the help of a member of the public’s boat, officers managed to track down the pair and apprehend them on Bjelke Peterson Dam.
The Great Escape (Almost!)
But one of the teenagers, a 16-year-old from Acacia Ridge, wasn’t ready to give up yet. As police were taking them back to shore, he made a break for it, stealing a marked police vehicle – a Toyota Hilux utility – and speeding off.
Officers in the area gave chase, but the teenager’s joyride came to an abrupt end when he drove into Barambah Creek, off Ashton Street, Murgon, and got stuck in the mud.
The Final Showdown
The teenager then fled on foot, jumping into Barambah Creek in a desperate bid to escape. But it wasn’t meant to be.
He was arrested shortly after, and both he and his 15-year-old accomplice from Inala were charged with multiple offenses.
The 16-year-old faces 21 charges, including unlawful use of a motor vehicle, dangerous operation of a vehicle, and escaping lawful custody.
The 15-year-old has been charged with over 10 offenses, including unlawful use of a motor vehicle and entering a dwelling with intent.
Justice Will Be Served
Both teenagers have been denied police bail and will appear in the Kingaroy Children’s Court on June 23. The police vehicle, fortunately, sustained only minor damage.
The incident is still under investigation, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
If you have any details, you can report them to Policelink or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
