A heart-wrenching farewell ceremony was held on Saturday for Adriana Smith, the 31-year-old Georgia woman who was kept on life support due to the state’s strict abortion law.
The funeral took place at Fairfield Baptist Church in Lithonia, drawing a large crowd of family, friends, and members of the public.
A Tragic Turn of Events
In February, Adriana was declared brain-dead after a CT scan revealed multiple blood clots in her brain.
She was nine weeks pregnant at the time and was rushed to the hospital by her boyfriend after he woke up to find her gasping for air and making strange noises.
Due to Georgia’s LIFE Act, which makes abortion illegal after six weeks of pregnancy, Adriana was kept alive until her baby could be born and survive on his own.
The baby, named Chance, was born prematurely on June 13, weighing just 1 pound, 13 ounces.
A Mother’s Sacrifice
Adriana was taken off life support days after giving birth to Chance, who is still in the neonatal intensive care unit.
Her family is grateful that Chance is expected to recover, but the loss of Adriana has left a gaping hole in their lives.
Adriana’s funeral was a celebration of her life, attended by her fellow nurses, family, and friends.
The Atlanta Metropolitan Nursing Honor Guard performed a tribute to relieve Adriana of her duties as a nurse, and many mourners carried white roses to honor her memory.
A Legacy of Love
Adriana’s younger sister, Naya, paid tribute to her sister, saying, “I’m thankful for everything that she’s taught me — her love, her kindness, her wisdom.
Family meant everything to her. So I hope that I can follow in her footsteps.”
Adriana is survived by her two sons, Chase and Chance, and will be deeply missed by her loved ones.
Her tragic story has sparked a national conversation about the implications of strict abortion laws and the importance of protecting women’s reproductive rights.
