A tragic incident has shaken the community in Queensland’s southeast, as a light plane crashed in a grassy field near Toowoomba, killing two people on impact.
The accident occurred on Sunday afternoon, just after 3 pm, when the twin turboprop Reims Cessna F406 aircraft went down in Kelvinhaugh, near Toowoomba.
Emergency Services Rush to the Scene
Paramedics and emergency responders rushed to the scene, where they declared the two occupants of the plane dead.
According to Queensland Police Acting Senior Sergeant Matt Forbes, the plane created a “very large fireball” when it crashed, with a loud explosion heard on the ground.
Investigations Underway
The police have launched an investigation into the incident, with forensic testing underway to identify the bodies.
It’s understood that the crash occurred during a standard proficiency test that pilots take annually to check their skills in landing a plane and performing other maneuvers without sight of the horizon.
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau will transport the recovered aircraft wreckage to its technical facilities in Canberra for further study.
The police are urging anyone with video footage of the light plane, at any phase of the flight or in the immediate aftermath of the crash, to contact the ATSB.
