After an incredible career filled with courageous comebacks, Carlton midfielder Sam Docherty has announced his retirement from the AFL.
The 31-year-old will play his 184th and final game against Hawthorn on Thursday night at the MCG, and will be honored with a tribute at the club’s next home game against the Gold Coast Suns on August 9.
A True Inspiration to Many
Docherty has bravely battled testicular cancer not once, but twice, undergoing surgery and treatment before returning to the AFL.
In 2020, he was first diagnosed with testicular cancer, but he didn’t let that stop him from playing the game he loves.
He made a remarkable comeback to the AFL, only to be diagnosed with cancer again in 2021.
Despite the physical and emotional toll, Docherty remained a key leader at Carlton throughout his recovery, proving to be an inspiration to many.
A Career Marked by Resilience and Comebacks
On top of his cancer battles, Docherty has also overcome three ACL tears, including one in Round 1 of the 2024 season at the Gabba.
Incredibly, he completed a full rehabilitation in just six months, returning to the field for the elimination final against Brisbane – 183 days after the injury, and at the same ground where it all happened.
His comeback was seen as one of the most courageous moments of the AFL season, and a testament to his unwavering dedication to the sport.
As Docherty hangs up his boots, he leaves behind a legacy of resilience, courage, and inspiration that will be remembered for years to come.
