LONDON, ENGLAND – A plus-size travel influencer is speaking out against the challenges faced by heavyset travelers, citing narrow aisles, tightly-packed rows, and cramped accommodations on airplanes.
Kirsty Leanne, 29, from the UK, shared her experiences as a plus-size flyer in a TikTok video that has garnered over 1.3 million views.
She explained that purchasing an additional seat is not a viable solution, citing the high cost and lack of clear company policies and practices for corpulent customers.
Leanne, founder of Plus Sized Travel Too, a website dedicated to overweight travelers, has faced criticism from some who suggest she should book a second seat or even a larger one at the front of the plane.
However, she emphasized that this solution is not feasible for many, as it can be incredibly expensive and often requires a complicated process with airline staff.
Moreover, Leanne noted that even when a second seat is booked, it can be taken away due to aircraft changes, which can completely alter the seating layout of the plane. She highlighted the emotional damage caused by careless companies that refuse to cater to the needs of plus-size travelers.
In addition to the challenges faced by plus-size travelers, Leanne’s call for size-inclusive air travel has sparked a broader conversation about the needs of all passengers, including tall people, old people, and those with disabilities.
Supporters have spoken out in solidarity, arguing that it is not fair to expect plus-size travelers to bear the burden of additional costs.
Leanne hopes that her message will raise awareness about the need for airlines to adopt more inclusive practices, ensuring that all passengers can travel comfortably and without discrimination.
As she stated, “Being fat is not a crime,” and it is time for the airline industry to acknowledge and accommodate the diverse needs of its customers.
