DARWIN, NORTHERN TERRITORY – A dramatic scene unfolded at Cahills Crossing on Sunday when a 4WD vehicle became stuck on a large crocodile while attempting to cross the infamous causeway.
A video capturing the incident has stunned thousands of online viewers, with many expressing shock at the “bizarre” sight.
Northern Territory resident Matteo Mastratisi filmed the encounter, which occurred around 12 pm on Sunday when the tide was high.
In the footage, the black 4WD can be seen inching towards the other side of the crossing, unaware of the crocodile’s presence.
As the vehicle hits the reptile, the driver slows down and reverses briefly, allowing the crocodile to free itself and glide back into the water.
According to Matteo, the driver acted sensibly in the situation.
“If the person behind the wheel had stopped just a few moments earlier, the car could have been dragged into the river,” he explained.
Fortunately, the crocodile did not appear to be seriously injured in the incident.
Matteo reported seeing the creature swimming in the water nearby, seemingly unharmed.
The incident serves as a warning to drivers attempting to cross Cahills Crossing, particularly during high tide.
Experts emphasize the need for caution, as numerous crocodiles inhabit the area and can be difficult to spot in the water.
“People need to be aware that there are numerous crocodiles at Cahills Crossing and they should drive with great care, both to avoid running over any of them and also to avoid getting pulled off the crossing by the current,” said Brandon Sideleau, a specialist in human and crocodile conflict.
As the video gains widespread attention, authorities are urging locals and tourists to exercise extreme caution when crossing the river, especially during high tide.
“Have a bit of patience and wait for the tide to drop down a bit so that you can see the crossing quite clearly and that there are no crocodiles on it,” advised John Lever, owner of Koorana Crocodile Farm in Queensland.
Residents and visitors are reminded to prioritize their safety and the well-being of the wildlife in the area.
By taking necessary precautions and heeding expert advice, the risk of accidents and injuries can be minimized.
