A 23-year-old woman, Paloma Shemirani, died from a heart attack caused by her untreated non-Hodgkin lymphoma after refusing chemotherapy, with her family attributing her death to her mother’s anti-medical conspiracy theories.
Paloma’s mother, Kate Shemirani, a disgraced nurse who was struck off in 2021 for spreading misinformation about Covid-19, had been involved in her daughter’s “treatment programme”, which included a strict diet, “lots of green juices”, and daily coffee enemas.
Paloma’s brother, Gabriel Shemirani, testified at the inquest that his mother’s influence led to Paloma’s reluctance to seek conventional medical treatment.
During the inquest, forensic psychiatrist Dr. Ali Ajaz, who had met with Paloma seven times at her mother’s recommendation, was questioned by Gabriel Shemirani.
Dr. Ajaz acknowledged that Paloma had been having coffee enemas daily but did not express concern about the practice.
The doctor also stated that it was not his role to comment on the efficacy of Paloma’s treatment programme.
Kate Shemirani, who attended the inquest via video link, was warned by Coroner Catherine Wood that her conduct during the hearing was “unacceptable” after she displayed signs in front of the camera and attempted to introduce new allegations during her questioning of Dr. Ajaz.
Paloma’s death has raised concerns about the dangers of misinformation and anti-medical conspiracy theories.
Gabriel and his brother Sebastian are speaking out to prevent similar tragedies.
The inquest is ongoing.
Anyone with concerns about cancer treatment or misinformation is encouraged to contact their healthcare provider or a trusted medical organization.
