Sydney, NSW – Thousands of pro-Palestinian supporters are expected to participate in a historic march across the Sydney Harbour Bridge on Sunday, after a court ruling allowed the event to proceed.
The march, which is expected to draw large crowds, will result in the closure of the Harbour Bridge from 11:30am to 4pm, with potential disruptions to traffic and public transportation in the CBD.
Police Response and Protections for Participants Authorities have warned of potential disruptions and have deployed hundreds of officers to facilitate a safe protest.
Participants will be afforded a level of protection against certain criminal offenses, following a court ruling that deemed the event an authorised public assembly.
Justice Belinda Rigg’s judgement on Saturday stated that participants will not be guilty of offenses related to participating in an unlawful assembly or obstructing roads or traffic during the event.
However, police still have extensive powers to direct people for public safety or in connection with possible criminal offending, which are not affected by the assembly’s authorised status.
Organisers’ Preparations and Disruptions Expected The Palestine Action Group, which has regularly held marches in the CBD, has planned for marshals and medics to be present during the event.
Organisers have urged participants to act peacefully and respectfully.
Transport for NSW has warned of significant disruptions to arterial roads and public transport, with buses potentially terminating at alternative stops and the rail system expecting heavy congestion.
People have been advised to avoid non-essential travel on public transport where possible.
Call to Action Members of the public are encouraged to listen to police instructions and act peacefully during the event.
Anyone with concerns or information can contact the NSW Police or Transport for NSW.
