Sydneyside, AUSTRALIA – Authorities have issued an urgent alert to residents in Frankston South, Melbourne, advising them to stop drinking tap water due to a drop in water pressure, making it unsafe for consumption.
The advisory was issued by South East Water on Sunday, affecting residents within the boundaries of Baden Powell Drive back to the foreshore, between Humphries Rd and Violet St.
Affected customers have been notified via SMS and email.
The drop in water pressure has raised concerns about dirty water and sediment flowing through the pipes, prompting the boil water advisory.
Residents have been advised to boil their tap water before consuming it to kill any bacteria and contaminants that may be present.
If ingested, the contaminated water may cause gastro-like symptoms, including diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and stomach cramps.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the water pressure issue and are undertaking water testing to ensure the local tap water is safe to drink.
In the meantime, residents have been advised to take precautions, including boiling water before drinking, preparing food, making ice, brushing teeth, and gargling.
Additionally, they should sponge-bath their babies and toddlers to prevent them from swallowing water.
Pet owners have been advised to provide cooled-down boiled water until the advisory is lifted.
Residents are reminded that water filter systems will not make the tap water safe to drink, as they are not designed to remove microbiological contamination from an unsafe water supply.
Unboiled water can still be used for flushing toilets, washing dishes and clothes, and watering the garden.
For more information and updates, residents are encouraged to contact South East Water directly.
The advisory will remain in place until the issue is resolved and the tap water is deemed safe for consumption.
