MELBOURNE – Australian TV personality Abbey Holmes has responded to criticism after announcing her return to work on Channel Seven’s AFL coverage just seven weeks after giving birth to her first child.
The 34-year-old former AFLW player and popular presenter welcomed her baby boy, Brax, on June 6 and is set to return to her broadcasting role two days a week.
Holmes faced backlash from some online trolls questioning her decision to return to work so soon, with some suggesting she should stay home with her baby.
However, the new mum has defended her choice, citing the support of her husband Keegan Brooksby and the fact that her baby is doing well.
“If he didn’t take a bottle or was really unsettled and only slept on me, or whatever it might have been, then I certainly would have been hamstrung and certainly not come back seven weeks after having him,” Holmes said.
The TV presenter also hit back at critics who suggested her husband was on “babysitting duty,” pointing out that parenting is a shared responsibility between mothers and fathers.
Holmes’ obstetrician, Dr. Scott Shemer, also weighed in, stating that as long as the baby is doing well and the mother is physically and emotionally healthy, there is no recommended return-to-work timeframe for new mothers.
Holmes is set to rejoin Channel Seven’s AFL coverage, where she has been a popular presenter.
Her return comes after a farewell message from her colleagues in June, when they praised her for her contributions to the team and wished her well in her new role as a mother.
The AFL community has largely supported Holmes’ decision to return to work, with many congratulating her on her new role as a mother and her ability to balance work and family life.
