Germany Halts Arms Exports to Israel Amid Growing International Outrage
In a significant shift in Berlin’s support for Israel, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has announced a halt on the export of military equipment that could be used in the Gaza Strip, as global condemnation mounts over Israel’s plans to expand its military offensive in the region.
The move comes after weeks of criticism from Germany and other international partners, who have expressed deep concern over the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza.
Merz’s administration has stated that Israel’s latest decision to intensify military action in the Gaza Strip makes it increasingly difficult to achieve the country’s goals, including the release of Israeli hostages and a negotiated ceasefire.
International Backlash Grows
The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, has described Israel’s plans as a “dangerous escalation” that risks deepening the catastrophic consequences for millions of Palestinians.
The European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, and the European Council President, António Costa, have also urged Israel to reconsider its plans, warning of consequences for EU-Israel relations.
Other international leaders, including the UK Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, and Spain’s Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares, have joined in the condemnation, calling on Israel to immediately halt its plans and negotiate a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
Germany’s Shift in Stance
Germany’s decision to halt arms exports to Israel marks a significant departure from its traditionally strong support for the nation.
Berlin has historically prioritised the security relationship with Israel, describing its defence as critical to its own national identity due to its responsibility for the Holocaust.
However, public opinion in Germany has grown increasingly critical of Israel’s actions, with a recent poll indicating that nearly three-quarters of respondents believe Berlin should apply more pressure on the Israeli government to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Merz’s administration has reiterated its call for Israel to allow full-scale access for aid deliveries and to refrain from annexing the West Bank.
The move is seen as a crucial step towards addressing the devastating humanitarian situation in Gaza, but many are calling for further action, including a possible suspension of Israel’s trade status with the EU.
