Paul Kelly Bids Farewell to Iconic Song Character Joe in Humorous Death Notice
In the notice, which appears on page 33 of Monday’s edition, Kelly announces Joe’s passing due to “sudden misadventure.”
The obituary describes Joe as a devoted father, husband, brother, brother-in-law, and uncle, listing names that are familiar to fans of the song, including Dan, Rita, Stella, Roger, Mary, Angus, Frank, and Dolly.
It also references Joe’s love of reggae music and Junior Murvin, and invites readers to attend a funeral on Thursday, August 14th, followed by “a wake to end all wakes.”
Kelly’s Tribute Sparks Speculation
EMI Music Australia has declined to comment on the stunt, although The Age classifieds team confirmed that the label placed the ad.
The notice has also raised questions about a potential sequel to the Binge Original film adaptation of “How to Make Gravy,” which was released in 2024 and starred Hugo Weaving, Brenton Thwaites, and Daniel Henshall as Joe.
