Australia Refuses to be ‘Cheer Squad’ for Hamas After Recognising Palestine
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has rejected praise from Hamas, stating that his decision to recognise Palestine’s statehood is not an endorsement of the terrorist group.
Albanese faced criticism after Hamas welcomed Australia’s historic move, with the PM reiterating that a two-state solution between Palestine and Israel would not involve Hamas.
He stressed that Australia’s position is aimed at supporting a peaceful way forward, isolating Hamas, and promoting a two-state solution.
Conditions for Recognition
The PM’s decision to recognise Palestine’s statehood is predicated on several conditions, including demilitarisation, free and fair elections, and ensuring Hamas plays no role in the state.
Albanese reassured that Hamas would be excluded from the process, citing the need for a peaceful solution.
Opposition Criticism
Opposition Leader Sussan Ley questioned the effectiveness of the conditions, suggesting they would make lasting peace nearly impossible.
She also claimed that Hamas had labelled Albanese a “hero” for his announcement, which the PM disputed.
Ley had previously expressed support for Palestinian statehood, which Albanese pointed out, stating that she had changed her stance.
The Australian government’s recognition of Palestine’s statehood has sparked a heated debate, with the PM reaffirming his commitment to a peaceful two-state solution that excludes Hamas.
