Calls for China to Act Against National Accused of Throwing Coffee at Baby in Brisbane
The incident occurred on August 27, 2024, at Hanlon Park, where the baby, Luka, was with his mother when the man, not known to the family, dumped a Thermos of hot coffee on him before fleeing the scene.
Luka sustained burns to 60 per cent of his body, including his face and upper body, and was forced to undergo multiple surgeries.
Background and Investigation
The suspect was captured on CCTV footage fleeing the scene, but authorities were unable to track him down initially.
However, it is believed that he returned to China via New Zealand just days after the incident.
Queensland Police put an arrest warrant out for the man for intending to cause grievous bodily harm, which carries a maximum life sentence.
Evidence from Queensland Police against the suspect has been provided to Chinese authorities, but authorities have refused to confirm the move.
Under Chinese law, citizens cannot be extradited for prosecution to foreign countries.
Nevertheless, authorities are pushing for China to take action against the alleged offender.
Official Statements and Actions
Acting Commissioner Shane Chelepy stated that investigations into the “horrible incident” are ongoing almost one year on.
He also paid tribute to the efforts of investigators in finding the culprit, adding that they are still working with international partners to progress the matter.
Queensland Police Detective Inspector Paul Dalton revealed that the man fled the country just 12 hours after they identified him.
The infant’s parents, who did not wish to be named, told The Australian that Luka still has to have regular surgeries and gets laser and skin needling to reduce the appearance of the scars.
Current Status and Future Implications
Almost a year on from the incident, Luka is still undergoing treatment for the serious injuries he sustained during the attack.
His parents reported that he has scars on his chin, shoulder, and back, but “otherwise, he’s healed really well and is thriving in life”.
The incident has sparked concerns about the suspect’s motivations, with Chinese media reporting that he had been on various visas since arriving in Australia in 2019.
The suspect’s visa application was reportedly rejected, leading to allegations that he sought to take out his anger on baby Luka.
Queensland Police stated that the investigation is ongoing, and “further information will be provided at an appropriate time”.
The authorities remain committed to securing justice for the victim and his family.
