Perth Woman Charged with Concealing Birth of Deceased Infant Found in Stormwater Drain
A Western Australian woman in her 30s has been charged with concealing the birth of a deceased child after the body of a baby boy was discovered in a stormwater drain in Alexander Heights, Perth.
The infant’s body was found on Monday afternoon, and the woman, confirmed to be the child’s mother, has been cooperating with police since Wednesday.
Authorities allege the child was placed in the drain a short time before its discovery.
Investigation and Support for the Mother
According to Acting Inspector Jessica Securo, the WA police homicide chief, the woman is receiving “appropriate care and support” during the investigation.
Securo praised community members who alerted police about the woman, potentially saving her life.
Forensic testing is ongoing to determine the exact duration the baby was in the drain.
While the woman’s cooperation has been crucial, investigators are still working to establish the circumstances surrounding the infant’s death.
Community Reaction and Support
WA Premier Roger Cook described the incident as a “horrifying series of events” that has shaken the community.
Members of the public have left flowers and teddy bears at the drain site as a mark of respect.
Inspector Securo urged anyone affected by the incident to seek support services, acknowledging the distressing nature of the event for the community, detectives, and the infant’s family.
