A 32-year-old man from Broken Hill, New South Wales, has been taken into custody following the reported theft of more than $700,000 in cash from multiple ATMs in the area.
According to authorities, the suspect allegedly accessed the machines as part of his employment, depositing over $375,000 into various personal and business accounts.
The remaining $326,000 is still unaccounted for, with police continuing their investigation.
Arrest and Charges
Detectives executed a search warrant on a Broken Hill residence on Tuesday afternoon, during which the suspect was seen approaching the premises in his vehicle.
He allegedly drove away upon noticing the officers, but was subsequently followed and stopped by police.
A search of the man’s car uncovered $6,235 in cash, ATM security tags, and keys.
Further investigation of his residence yielded additional evidence, including digital devices and security tags.
The accused has been charged with nine counts of larceny greater than $15,000 and knowingly dealing with proceeds of crime.
He has been granted conditional bail and is set to appear in Broken Hill Local Court on September 9.
Police are urging anyone with information regarding the remaining missing funds to come forward, as the investigation continues.
