Dave Hughes Recovers from Injuries Sustained in AFL Legends Game
Hughes took to the field for the Victorian squad but soon found himself in Cabrini Hospital’s ICU after a hit from former West Coast Eagle Andrew Embley.
Despite his injuries, Hughes played out the remainder of the match, even slotting a goal and celebrating with his teammates post-game.
Incident and Aftermath
The 54-year-old comedian continued to celebrate into the early hours of Friday morning, but his wife, Holly, rushed him to the hospital shortly after, where the full extent of his injuries was revealed.
Hughes has since spoken about the incident, stating that he is still experiencing discomfort and struggling to talk due to the hole in his lung.
Hughes also recalled a second incident during the game, in which he was hit by Daniel Gorringe in the ruck.
He expressed his frustration that Gorringe did not give him a heads-up before the tackle, breaking the unwritten rule of the Legends game.
Apologies and Support
Both Andrew Embley and Daniel Gorringe have apologised for their actions during the game.
Embley expressed his regret for the “little thump” that caused Hughes’ injuries, while Gorringe apologised for his role in the incident, saying he hoped Hughes was resting up and having a speedy recovery.
Future Commitments
Despite his injuries, Hughes has not cancelled any upcoming gigs, including a show in Queensland on Saturday, which has already sold out.
However, he has raised concerns about how he will travel to the event, given his current condition.
