The Thredbo community is reeling in shock after a 22-year-old skier died in a horror crash on the slopes of the popular resort on Tuesday. The tragedy occurred at around 12:10pm, when the young man crashed on the mountain, prompting a desperate response from first responders and the Thredbo Ski Patrol and Medical Centre doctor.
Despite their best efforts, the 22-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a NSW Police spokesman. Monaro Police District will prepare a report for the coroner, the spokesman added.
The Thredbo Alpine Resort has expressed its deepest condolences to the family and friends of the young man, saying the community is “deeply saddened” by the tragedy. “The Thredbo community extends its heartfelt condolences to family and friends during this incredibly difficult time,” a spokesman said.
This is the second fatal skiing accident in the Snowy Mountains in just two weeks. On August 12, Drew Youngquist, a 22-year-old US medical student, died in a snowboarding accident at Perisher Ski Resort. Youngquist was described as an experienced skier who worked as a guide at Utah Olympic Park and was an engaged and valued member of the University of Utah community.
Perisher Vice President and General Manager Nathan Butterworth said they were “devastated” by the news of Youngquist’s death. “Perisher Ski Resort, Ski Patrol, and the entire Vail Resorts family extend our deepest sympathy and support to our guest’s family and friends,” he said.
The double tragedy has sent shockwaves through the skiing and snowboarding community, with many paying tribute to the young men who lost their lives on the slopes.
