In a shocking and disturbing incident, a 14-year-old boy was left fighting for his life after a savage attack in his school cafeteria – all because he told a joke. Lukas Hardeman, a creative and loving teenager, was body-slammed by another student, leaving him with severe brain bleeds and swelling.
According to his family, Lukas was attacked on August 21 at his middle school in Kilgore, Texas. The alleged attacker, also 14, picked him up and body-slammed him, causing his head to hit a stool. The impact was so severe that it resulted in multiple brain bleeds and swelling.
“He’s embarrassed. He is hurt. He is struggling,” Lukas’ father, Michael Hardeman, said in a heartbreaking interview with KLTV. “But I hope when he sees things like this that he has a lot of family behind him. I hope that he can get to a point to where he is confident.”
Lukas underwent emergency surgery, which required parts of his skull to be removed. He now has more than 60 staples holding his head together. A GoFundMe page set up to support his recovery has raised over $35,000.
The school district, Kilgore ISD, has released a statement expressing their commitment to students’ safety and security, but it remains unclear if any action has been taken against the alleged attacker.
“The event from last week has left us all shaken, it was both unexpected and deeply troubling, and our thoughts and prayers remain with our student who was injured,” the statement read.
Lukas’ family has described him as a “creative, loving teenager who enjoys drawing, gaming, and spending time with his siblings and family.” They hope that he can make a full recovery and regain his confidence.
