Neal Thompson, a 38-year veteran of the police force, was just days away from retirement when his life was tragically cut short. On Monday, his colleagues, friends, and family gathered to bid a heartbreaking farewell to the dedicated detective.
The funeral, attended by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Premier Jacinta Allan, and Police Commissioner Mike Bush, was a poignant tribute to a man who had dedicated his life to serving and protecting others.
Lisa Thompson, Neal’s girlfriend and a fellow police officer, delivered a heart-wrenching eulogy, remembering her partner as the “best husband she never had.” She described Neal as a “provider and protector” who had taught her how to “love without fear and how to be brave when I am scared.”
Through tears, Lisa recalled the final weekend they shared together, saying, “That night as we wined and dined and gazed at the stars, we left nothing unsaid.” She added, “I don’t want to live life without you.”
Long-time friend Jason Williams remembered Neal as “one of the most loyal, generous, kind-hearted mates anyone could ever ask for.” He fondly recalled their phone calls, which always ended with Neal saying, “love you, buddy.”
Chief Commissioner Bush spoke of Neal being “robbed” of a well-deserved retirement after nearly four decades of service. The fallen officer was posthumously awarded the Victoria Police Star, National Police Service Medal, National Medal, and Victoria Police Service Medal.
As the search for alleged gunman Dezi Freeman continues, the police community comes together to mourn the loss of a dedicated officer and a loving partner, father, and friend. Neal Thompson’s legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
