US President Donald Trump has declared war on The New York Times, announcing plans to file a whopping $22 billion defamation and libel lawsuit against the newspaper. The move comes after the Times published a report about a suggestive note and drawing allegedly given to Epstein, which Mr Trump vehemently denies writing.
In a scathing post on his social media site Truth Social, Mr Trump accused The New York Times of becoming a “virtual ‘mouthpiece’ for the Radical Left Democrat Party”. He claimed the newspaper had been “allowed to freely lie, smear, and defame” him for far too long, but vowed that “that stops, NOW!”
Mr Trump pointed to past lawsuits, including a $23 million settlement against ABC News and anchor George Stephanopoulos, as evidence of his willingness to take on the media. He also cited a $24 million settlement against CBS parent media group Paramount over a 60 Minutes interview with former presidential rival Kamala Harris.
“The New York Times has engaged in a decades long method of lying about your Favorite President (ME!), my family, business, the America First Movement, MAGA, and our Nation as a whole,” Mr Trump wrote. “I will not stand idly by while they continue to spread their lies and propaganda.”
The lawsuit is set to be filed in Florida, although Mr Trump did not provide further details. A court filing showed Mr Trump suing the newspaper, according to Reuters.
The New York Times has not yet commented on the lawsuit, but Mr Trump’s move is likely to spark a fierce debate about freedom of the press and the limits of presidential power.
