Peter ‘Murph’ Murphy, the face of Tasmania’s weather for an astonishing 41 years, has announced his retirement from 7News Tasmania, sending shockwaves across the Apple Isle.
The longest-serving commercial TV weather presenter in Australia has been a constant presence on Tasmanian television, bringing his unique blend of calm authority and humour to the role. Murphy’s partnership with news anchor Kim Millar has been a highlight of the nightly news, and his ability to connect with viewers has made him a household name.
In a heartfelt statement, Murphy reflected on his remarkable career: “Weather is such a big part of this community, and I’ve always tried to respect that while sneaking in a little fun along the way. Tasmania’s weather is unpredictable, the job has been unforgettable, and the people have made it all worthwhile.”
Beyond his on-air persona, Murphy has been an invaluable contributor to the Tasmanian community, hosting numerous major sporting events, festivals, and gatherings as a master of ceremonies. His dedication to the role has earned him widespread respect, with Seven Tasmania’s director of news, Gavin McDougall, describing his contribution as “immeasurable”.
“Peter Murphy is more than a weather presenter – he’s part of the fabric of Tasmanian life,” McDougall said. “His commitment, professionalism, and connection with viewers have set an extremely high standard. His departure marks the end of an incredible chapter in our television history.”
Current weekend weather presenter Kiah Wicks will take over the weekday role after Murphy’s farewell on September 22, which will feature a special tribute to his remarkable career.
