Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night talk show has been indefinitely suspended by ABC after the host made scathing comments about President Trump and FBI Director Kash Patel‘s handling of the investigation into the assassination of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk.
In a dramatic move, ABC took the decision to pull the plug on Kimmel’s show after he mocked President Trump’s reaction to the killing, calling it “not how an adult grieves the murder of someone he called a friend.” Kimmel also slammed Trump’s focus on building a $200 million ballroom in the White House, saying it was a distraction from the real issues.
President Trump was quick to celebrate the show’s cancellation, taking to social media to label Kimmel as “zero talent” and saying the decision was “great news for America.” Trump has been a long-time critic of Kimmel, and has previously called for his show to be taken off the air.
Kimmel’s comments about Trump’s reaction to the killing of Charlie Kirk were widely reported, with many calling them tasteless and insensitive. The late-night host played a video of Trump responding to reporters’ questions about holding up after the death of Kirk, with the President talking about the construction of a new ballroom in the White House.
Kimmel said Trump’s reaction was “not how an adult grieves the murder of someone he called a friend. This is how a four-year-old mourns a goldfish, okay?” The host also questioned the purpose of building a $200 million ballroom in the White House, joking that it was a way for Trump to distract from the real issues.
FBI Director Kash Patel also came under fire from Kimmel, who said the investigation into the murder of Charlie Kirk was being mishandled. Kimmel joked that Patel “always looks like he just got hit by a Volkswagen” and said his handling of the investigation was “amateurish.”
Nexstar, one of the country’s biggest owners of ABC affiliate stations, also took a decision to stop broadcasting Kimmel’s show, saying they “strongly object” to his comments. The company said Kimmel’s comments about the death of Charlie Kirk were “offensive and insensitive” and did not reflect the values of the local communities they serve.
Charlie Kirk, the co-founder and CEO of the youth organisation Turning Point USA, was assassinated during an event at Utah Valley University on September 10. Tyler Robinson, 22, has been arrested and charged with his murder.
