INFERNO IN THE EAST: Apocalyptic Scenes as Massive Factory Fire Engulfs Seven Cars in Sydney’s Matraville
- Seven cars destroyed in devastating blaze at paper storage facility
- Firefighters battle intense flames, smoke billows across city
- Residents evacuated, motorists warned to avoid area due to toxic fumes
Matraville, in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, was thrown into chaos yesterday when a massive fire tore through a paper storage facility, destroying seven cars and forcing evacuations.
The blaze erupted about 1.10pm on Friday at the Botany Rd site, sending thick black smoke billowing into the sky and sparking a second blaze at nearby parked cars.
“We are containing the fire at the top, but we know that the fire is burning deep-seated, deep into those areas of compacted paper,” Superintendent Adam Dewberry said.
Nearby residents reported hearing explosive sounds as gas bottles ignited during the vehicle fire, with one resident describing the scene as “really loud booms just coming from over here. Flames, smoke, just everything.”
Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) confirmed that all workers from the business had been accounted for, and more than 20 fire trucks and 80 firefighters were dispatched to the scene to battle the blaze.
Motorists have been urged to avoid the area, with traffic diversions in place, and nearby residents have been advised to close doors, windows, and vents due to the dangerous smoke.
The cause of the fire is still unknown, but the devastating incident has left a trail of destruction in its wake.
